Ottawa, Ontario, June 19, 2008 – The Royal Canadian Mint received a welcome accolade from its peers when the Mint Directors Conference, holding its 25th annual meeting in Busan, Korea, presented it with the Most Technologically Advanced Circulation Coin Award for its 25-cent breast cancer coloured circulation coin. This is the second honour earned by this inspirational and innovative circulation coin, which was previously recognized in May 2007 as the “Best New Coin” by the International Association of Currency Affairs.

“The Royal Canadian Mint makes a great effort to be the best Mint in the world and it is immensely rewarding when our efforts are validated by our peers” said Ian E. Bennett, RCM President and CEO. “I welcome this award as the Mint marks its centennial year, and as my fellow employees and I proudly celebrate a century of innovation and achievement.”

The 25-cent breast cancer circulation coin features the iconic pink ribbon, the symbol of hope and awareness in the effort to create a future without breast cancer. Thirty million breast cancer coins entered into circulation beginning on April 1, 2006. These were the second coloured circulation coins to be produced by the Royal Canadian Mint’s Winnipeg facility, following the popular 25-cent poppy coin in the fall of 2004. Considered one of the most innovative mints in the world, the Mint has pioneered and perfected the technology process to apply colour to circulation coins.

About the Mint Directors Conference
The Mint Directors Conference (MDC) was organized for the purpose of exchanging information on all monetary matters and related legal, economic, technical, administrative and numismatic questions of interest to the minting industry. The MDC provides a forum for co-operating on the study of current issues and mutually agreeable solutions. The MDC also promotes study and research into all coin-related matters, including the implications of new means of payment.

About the Royal Canadian Mint
The Royal Canadian Mint, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2008, is the Crown Corporation responsible for the minting and distribution of Canada’s circulation coins. An ISO 9001-2000 certified company, the Mint is recognized as one of the largest and most versatile mints in the world, offering a wide range of specialized, high quality coinage products and related services on an international scale. For more information on the Mint’s history, its products and services, please visit www.mint.ca.

COLORADO SPRINGS – The American Numismatic Association is accepting nominations for its 42nd annual Numismatic Art Award for Excellence in Medallic Sculpture.

The award honors an artist whose cumulative lifetime achievements in the field of medallic sculpture have been of the highest order.

Nominations submitted in 2006 will again be considered for this year’s award. Additional nominations, which are due April 1, should include the name of the nominee, ANA number (if a member), address, contact information, a list of numismatic accomplishments, a brief biography, and photographs of at least five medals – or Internet addresses where they can be viewed. Nominators should include their addresses and contact information; artists may nominate themselves.

Nominations should be sent to Susan McMillan, awards coordinator, American Numismatic Association, 818 N. Cascade Ave., Colorado Springs, CO 80903, emailed to mcmillan@money.org, or faxed to 719-634-4085. Call 719-482-9850 for more information.

The award, which exemplifies the fine art of designing and sculpting, will be presented at the annual ANA Awards Banquet Aug. 11 at the World’s Fair of Money in Milwaukee.

“The list of past winners of this award reads like a who’s who of American and international medalists,” said Mel Wacks, who chairs the NAAEMS Committee. Award recipients have ranged from Paul Vincze in 1966 to Leonda Finke in 2006.

The NAAEMS award selection committee includes Wacks, member of the board of directors of AMSA and coordinator of the longest continuing series of art medals in the U.S.; David Alexander, one of the founders of Medal Collectors of America; Richard Doty, Ph.D., curator of coins at the Smithsonian Institution; Leonda Finke, renowned medalist and last year’s winner; Cory Gillilland, Ph.D., the U.S. representative to FIDEM; Doug Mudd, ANA curator of exhibitions; Mashiko Nakashima, medallic art gallery owner; Donald Scarinci, member of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee; and Alan Stahl, Ph.D., curator of numismatics at Princeton University.

The American Numismatic Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating and encouraging people to study and collect money and related items. With nearly 32,000 members, the Association serves the academic community, collectors and the general public with an interest in numismatics.

The ANA helps all people discover and explore the world of money through its vast array of programs including its education and outreach, museum, library, publications, conventions and seminars. For more information about the ANA, call 719.632.2646 or visit www.MONEY.org.

In an election year, presidential words of wisdom often get drowned out by talking points
and mudslinging. The American Numismatic Association’s new online Presidential Quiz cuts
through the pandering and pork to deliver money-related quotes with the presidential seal
of approval.

The quiz will launch at www.money.org on Feb. 11, a week before President’s Day. Everyone
who completes the quiz will be eligible to win numismatic prizes.

Embarking on their political journey, quiz-takers must match each quote with one of the 38
commanders-in-chief to be featured in the Presidential $1 Coin Program. The quiz offers two
lifelines for anyone stumped by the choices: The “Need a hint?” line under each question
reveals the state quarter of the correct president’s birthplace, and the Presidential
Biographies offer additional clues. The quiz may be tricky at times but as Albert Einstein
once said, “Politics is more difficult than physics.”

Everyone who completes the quiz will be entered into a monthly drawing for a free, oneyear
ANA membership, courtesy of ANA Life Member Joel Rettew. Anyone who scores more
than 20 points will receive an uncirculated Presidential Dollar with any order from the
MoneyMarket catalog. Top scorers, with more than 30 points, will be entered to win one of
10 Presidential Proof Sets; names will be drawn at the World’s Fair of Money®, July 30-Aug. 3
in Baltimore.

The Presidential $1 Coin Program issues four coins per year featuring U.S. Presidents in
chronological order by term in office. The series will end once all eligible presidents have
been honored. At present, it is expected to end with Ronald Reagan’s coin in 2016.

The following message is from the family of Dr. Charles Radford Stearns.

Dear Friend,
Dr. Charles Radford Stearns began his eternal life with Christ Sunday, August 31, 2008 after experiencing all he could during the time God gave him on earth.

He was born in Evanston, Illinois on October 12, 1940 to George Radford and Elisabeth D. Stearns and is survived by his wife of 42 years Mary Lucy (Franzman), his children Katherine Radford Stearns, Kristine Radford Lively (Ty), Thomas Radford Stearns and Ana Silva; his cousins John Cutler (Marilyn), Katrina Chandler (Howie), Jon Veeder (Sally), Robin Dailey (Jim), Paul Seng (Helen) and Jeanne Cuttita (Peter). He was loved as a brother by his brother-in-law Father Thomas Franzman and as a son by his mother-in-law Margaret Taylor Franzman.

After attending Notre Dame University he graduated from the Chicago College of Dental Surgery (Loyola) in 1967) to serve as an officer in the United States Navy in Albany, GA from 1967-1969. Dr. Stearns practiced general dentistry in Winder, GA but assembled the “perfect” staff in Lilburn, GA where he worked until his retirement in 2006. Adventure travel, scuba diving, numismatics, underwater and wildlife photography and the Georgia Aquarium were just a few of his interests. His most significant trait was unbridled enthusiasm for anything he embraced, in his later years being the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Lilburn Relay for Life.

He will be missed greatly by those whose lives he has touched.
Let us remember that we need not mourn when great men as these are lost, but rather celebrate that they had lived among us.

A prayer service will be held Wednesday, September 3rd at 7 in the evening, in Decatur, Georgia. Visitation will follow the service.

A Special Note of Thanks from Joan Wilde:

Dear ANA Members and Friends:
Adna considered being a member of the ANA an honor. He held his membership in the highest esteem. We are all collectors in some way whether it is of thoughts or memories or of times we recall being together with others of the same interests. Adna would be honored to know that so many friends and acquaintances recall and remember the times they met him and spent with him.

Thank you for these remembrances and for friendships that were so much a part of his life.
- Joan Wilde

Retired Lt. Col. Adna G. Wilde Jr., former president, Board member, executive director, treasurer and parliamentarian of the American Numismatic Association, died on the morning of Nov. 17 in Colorado Springs. He was 88.

“This is a sad time for our Association,” ANA President Barry Stuppler said. “Adna will be remembered as one of the most important leaders in our history. Everyone who knew him respected him for his kindness, professionalism, and service to his country. He was the finest gentleman I’ve ever known, and he will be deeply missed.”

A member since 1947 (Life Member 232), Wilde served as executive director from 1968-72, governor from 1973-79, vice president from 1979-81, president from 1981-83 and treasurer from 1983-2008. He received the Farran Zerbe Memorial Award in 1985, the Medal of Merit and Exemplary Service Award in 1991, the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998, and Presidential Awards in 1994, 1998 and 2008. He received the inaugural award named in his honor, the Adna G. Wilde Jr. Award for Excellence, this October.

Wilde was elected to the ANA Numismatic Hall of Fame in 2002, was named ANA Numismatist of the Year in 2005 and received the Numismatic Ambassador Award from Numismatic News in 1995.

He was born in Vicksburg, Miss., on Oct. 1, 1920, and graduated from The Citadel in 1943. After college, he joined the Army, and was wounded in combat in Italy during World War II. He moved to Colorado Springs in 1945 and served as an officer in the Army, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel before coming to the ANA in 1968.

An accomplished numismatist, he was known most notably for his research of Lesher Referendum dollars and Stone Mountain commemorative half dollars. In his first year as executive director, he and Ed Rochette were instructors for the first Summer Seminar. Enrollment the first year was 17 for the week-long educational event; Summer Seminar has since expanded to two weeks and attracts over 400 students each year.

“The ANA benefited from Adna’s expertise for 40 years,” said Executive Director Larry Shepherd. “He inspired countless young collectors, and provided a steady hand through good times and bad. His legacy will help guide the Association for generations to come.”

Wilde is survived by his wife, Joan. He will be buried with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. Information about memorial services and donations will be released when it becomes available. The ANA has created a memorial page on its Web site; all are welcome to post their thoughts, condolences and memories.
Thank you,
The ANA Family

The Adna G. Wilde Jr. Summer Seminar Scholarship Fund has been established as a tribute to Wilde’s contributions to numismatic education.

(Long Beach, CA) — One of the first coins made in the earliest days of the United States Mint in 1792, produced from silver personally provided by President George Washington and valued today at $1.5 million, will be displayed for the first time ever in California at the Long Beach Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo in the Long Beach Convention Center, June 3 – 5. eBay will conduct two public seminars at the show about buying and selling collectibles online.

“President Washington gave the Mint $100 worth of silver to produce these coins, and it is believed that bullion came from Martha Washington’s silverware,” explained Ronald J. Gillio, Expo General Chairman.

“The coin on display in Long Beach is known as the 1792 Half Disme, an early spelling of the word, ‘dime,’ and it’s a prototype for today’s five-cent denomination coins.”

“It is a tiny coin with a big history. It was sharply struck 212 years ago and remains in pristine condition. The surface of the little silver coin has beautiful, rainbow-colored tones from two centuries of natural oxidation,” said the coin’s owner, Bob Higgins of the Rare Coin Alliance of Wilmington, Delaware.

Slightly smaller than a modern dime, the 1792 Half Disme on display in California for the first time is the finest known of less than 250 surviving specimens. Originally, 1,500 of the coins were made in July 1792 in Philadelphia and presented to then-Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson, prior to their release into circulation.

“This historic early American coin depicts Miss Liberty on the front and the words, HALF DISME, under an eagle on the tail’s side. It was worth five-cents two centuries ago, but today it’s valued at $1.5 million,” said Higgins.

eBay, a sponsor of the Long Beach Expo, will present two free educational seminars for collectors and dealers, “Buying & Selling on eBay,” conducted by Troy Thoreson at Noon on both Friday, June 4, and Saturday, June 5.

Additional educational seminars and exhibits will be presented by the Long Beach Coin Club and Long Beach Stamp Club.

Heritage Numismatic Auctions of Dallas, Texas will conduct a multi-million dollar public auction of historic rare coins and paper money during the show. There will be a children’s treasure hunt on Saturday, June 5, and a gold coin door prize will be awarded each day of the three-day show.

Show hours are Thursday – Saturday, June 3 – 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Admission is $6 (good for all three days); $3 for seniors 65 and older and children, ages 8 to 16. (Free admission for children aged seven and younger.)

(Long Beach, CA) – The first three-day Long Beach Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo, shortened from its traditional four-day schedule, attracted a total of 8,781 dealers, collectors and general public visitors, Thursday through Saturday, June 3 – 5, 2004.

“We had strong attendance. The Thursday crowd of more than 3,000 public visitors was second in opening-day attendance only to the February 2000 show when the S.S. Central America “Ship of Gold” exhibit made its first appearance,” said Ronald J. Gillio, Expo General Chairman. “In fact, our opening day this time was even stronger than in June 2002 when the 1933 Double Eagle was exhibited by the United States Mint.”

A “kid’s treasure hunt” on Saturday, June 5, attracted more than 300 young numismatists, according to Gillio.

Also adding to the attendance was the first California appearance of the finest known 1792 Half Disme (Judd-7, Breen-1360) owned and exhibited by the Rare Coin Alliance, LTD; two eBay seminars; and Heritage Numismatic Auctions, Inc. conducted auction sessions involving both United States and world coins.

News stories about the 1792 Half Disme, graded NCG-68, appeared on Fox Network television station, KTTV, in Los Angeles, as well the Long Beach Press-Telegram newspaper.

For several decades, the Long Beach Expo was conducted from Thursday through Sunday, but now it is a Thursday to Saturday show. “We stopped the Sunday hours for a good reason: many dealers were packing up and leaving on Saturday night, so that only about a third of the tables were manned on Sundays. When you advertise you’re open, the public expects all the exhibitors to be present and ready for business,” explained Gillio. “Because we now are closed on Sundays, we require dealers to be at their tables until at least 5 o’clock Saturday afternoon. This gives the public a full show and still allows East coast dealers enough time to catch late flights home Saturday night. The bourse floor remained secured by armed guards through 11 o’clock Sunday morning for the convenience of dealers who wanted to leave later. We had tremendous cooperation from dealers, and collectors were happy about the new schedule.”

Gillio also said arrangements were made for an additional 600 parking spaces adjacent to the Long Beach Convention Center for the convenience of both dealers and the public.

About a dozen collector clubs conducted educational seminars at the June show, and exhibits were displayed by the Long Beach Coin Club and Long Beach Stamp Club.

In addition to eBay and Heritage, Expo sponsors include Professional Coin Grading Service, Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, British Royal Mint, Spanish Royal Mint, UBS Numismatics/Art Banking, World Money Fair of Basel, Switzerland and Coin Facts.com.

Another major attraction at the show will be two public seminars conducted by eBay about buying and selling collectibles online.

The sharply-struck, rainbow-toned silver Half Disme (an early spelling of the word, dime), is certified NGC-68.

“It is a tiny coin with a big history. The Chief Coiner, Adam Eckfeldt, recalled years later that President George Washington personally deposited $100 of silver bullion so these coins could be struck in July 1792. All 1,500 pieces minted were presented by Mint Director David Rittenhouse to then-Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson, prior to their release into circulation,” said Ronald J. Gillio, Expo General Chairman.

The coin is owned by Rare Coin Alliance, LTD., a wholesale rare coin trading fund managed by partners Bob Higgins and Don Ketterling, headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware.

“There is a famous painting that portrays President and Mrs. Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Mint Director Rittenhouse and other officials inspecting the just-struck first coins. These are the prototype for today’s five-cent denomination coins, and an early American expression of our national sovereignty,” said Higgins.

(Long Beach, CA) – A $1 million display of Saint Gaudens Double Eagles and a special appearance by author and researcher, David Tripp, will highlight the Long Beach Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo, Thursday – Saturday, September 9 – 11, 2004, in the Long Beach, California Convention Center. Another major attraction will be two public seminars conducted by eBay about buying and selling collectibles online.

“Tripp cataloged the historic July 2002 Sotheby’s/Stack’s $7,590,020 auction of the only 1933 Double Eagle the federal government will allow to be privately owned and was at the coin’s exhibition at the June 2002 Long Beach Expo. He will meet with collectors at the upcoming September show and autograph copies of his new book, ‘ILLEGAL TENDER: Gold, Greed and the Mystery of the Lost 1933 Double Eagle,’ published by Simon & Schuster,” said Ronald J. Gillio, Expo General Chairman.

In conjunction with the first West Coast appearance of Tripp’s new book, Gillio is assembling a $1 million exhibit of selected examples of Saint Gaudens Double Eagles that were minted from 1907 to 1933. The display will feature a 1907 High-Relief variety and a 1908 No Motto $20 gold piece from the Wells Fargo/Nevada Gold hoard graded PCGS MS69. It is one of only ten Saint Gaudens coins of any year to be certified MS69 by either PCGS or NGC.

“Almost a half million Double Eagles were minted in 1933 at the time President Franklin D. Roosevelt took America off the gold standard,” explained Tripp. “Never issued as legal tender, all the 1933 Double Eagles were supposed to be melted except for two sent to The Smithsonian Institution. But through deceit, corruption, intrigue and human error, some coins slipped out of the Mint and into private hands.”

eBay, a sponsor of the Long Beach Expo, will present two free educational seminars for collectors and dealers, “Buying & Selling on eBay,” conducted by Troy Thoreson, eBay Seller’s Consultant, at Noon on both Friday, September 10, and Saturday, September 11.

Additional educational seminars and exhibits will be presented by the Long Beach Coin Club and Long Beach Stamp Club, and a half dozen specialty organizations. A complete schedule of events can be found online at www.LongBeachExpo.com.

Heritage Numismatic Auctions of Dallas, Texas will conduct a multi-million dollar public auction of historic rare coins and paper money during the show. There will be a children’s treasure hunt on Saturday, September 11, and a gold coin door prize will be awarded each day of the three-day show.

In addition to eBay and Heritage, other Expo sponsors include Professional Coin Grading Service, Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, British Royal Mint, Spanish Royal Mint, UBS Numismatics/Art Banking, World Money Fair of Basel, Switzerland and Coin Facts.com.

Show hours are Thursday – Saturday, September 9 – 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Admission is $6 (good for all three days); $3 for seniors 65 and older and children, ages 8 to 16. (Free admission for children aged seven and younger.)
