COLORADO SPRINGS – The American Numismatic Association is accepting nominations for its 42nd annual Numismatic Art Award for Excellence in Medallic Sculpture.

The award honors an artist whose cumulative lifetime achievements in the field of medallic sculpture have been of the highest order.

Nominations submitted in 2006 will again be considered for this year’s award. Additional nominations, which are due April 1, should include the name of the nominee, ANA number (if a member), address, contact information, a list of numismatic accomplishments, a brief biography, and photographs of at least five medals – or Internet addresses where they can be viewed. Nominators should include their addresses and contact information; artists may nominate themselves.

The award, which exemplifies the fine art of designing and sculpting, will be presented at the annual ANA Awards Banquet Aug. 11 at the World’s Fair of Money in Milwaukee.

“The list of past winners of this award reads like a who’s who of American and international medalists,” said Mel Wacks, who chairs the NAAEMS Committee. Award recipients have ranged from Paul Vincze in 1966 to Leonda Finke in 2006.

The NAAEMS award selection committee includes Wacks, member of the board of directors of AMSA and coordinator of the longest continuing series of art medals in the U.S.; David Alexander, one of the founders of Medal Collectors of America; Richard Doty, Ph.D., curator of coins at the Smithsonian Institution; Leonda Finke, renowned medalist and last year’s winner; Cory Gillilland, Ph.D., the U.S. representative to FIDEM; Doug Mudd, ANA curator of exhibitions; Mashiko Nakashima, medallic art gallery owner; Donald Scarinci, member of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee; and Alan Stahl, Ph.D., curator of numismatics at Princeton University.
